How to accept yourself

Have you ever felt as though you were different from others? Maybe it was in a certain setting – work, school, or a party. You might walk in the room and immediately feel like everyone else is on the same vibe – and then there is you.

Well, I believe many experience this very feeling. Whether it is from some experience as a child, or an insecurity you developed later, I think many have faced this very challenge.

I believe it is the perception we have of ourselves that makes it difficult to break the barrier between ourselves and others.

So, here are some things I’ve learned about accepting myself (and am still learning). And ways you, too, can experience this acceptance (and listen to my poem inspired by this topic below!).

  1. Accept that everyone is unique in their own ways.

Everyone has their own unique personality. We are not all the same in what we like, our gifts, strengths, or our temperament. Some people like art, while others like science. Some like to be busy, while others like relaxation. Some people are more reserved, and quiet, while others thrive in social settings and a lot of energy.

I think it would be wiser to focus on our similarities rather than differences. Because the truth is that everyone is unique. And that we all have in common.

2. Bring what you have to the table.

What are your strengths and God-given gifts? There’s something special that you’ve been given that you can contribute. Find what that thing (or things) are and use them in your job or when you are collaborating with others. Use “your thing” towards some facet of your life, and you will find that that very thing will bring you closer to liking yourself. And thus build confidence to simply be yourself.

As an artist, I learned this firsthand. I found that when I used my talent of poetry or art, It made me feel as though I had a purpose and was doing something meaningful. And that gave me confidence in myself and my own unique voice.

3. Accept who you are. You’re the only one who can truly be you.

There’s no one on this planet quite like you. You were born to be you, not someone else. Learn about yourself. Accept your quirks, your personality that only you can express.

As we are all learning, growing, and evolving, let’s accept ourselves as we are, while also looking past our differences to find our similarities. Since I believe many have felt or feel this very way (including myself), let’s learn to accept ourselves every day in every way. There’s a whole world counting on you to be you.
