When they say you can’t, do it anyway

Have you ever felt as if the world was doubting you? Or did you think no one believed in you or your dream?

There was a period in my life when I was told I would never be “the same.” Doctors with PhDs, and family who did not believe, reaffirmed this notion that what happened to me could not be undone. In a way, many wrote me off and some even walked away.

However, something inside me knew that what was in front of me would not be my destiny. No matter who walked away, no matter what I saw, I still felt within me that I would not remain there.

Yet as time unfolded, what many of them predicted seemed to be my fate. I was not getting any better, and at times, only got worse.

Would this be my story? Would I allow what was in front of me and the voices around me to define me?

Well, I could have. But there was one problem – I just could not accept that as my reality.

As time progressed and I held firm to my belief that I would not remain stuck (although I, myself, had my doubts), I saw things slowly shift. I began to see myself getting better, and although it would be years before I saw any major transformation, I began to see what I believed come into fruition.

See, people who have all the knowledge in the world may doubt you. People close to you may doubt you. You, yourself, may even doubt you. But if you listen to your heart, you will find a small flame of hope that inspires you to keep going.

Here are some ways to do that thing that they say you can’t:

First, discern what is in you from what is outside of you

Do you have a dream that no one believes in but you? Or is there something in your heart you believe will happen that others say is impossible? My advice is to hold onto that dream. Even if it seems it will fail or never happen. If something is inside of you to do, continue to believe in it. Others may doubt and criticize you for it, but try to find a way to listen to your own heart.

Second, Follow your heart

Even if what others say about you seems to be the reality, follow your heart. Do the things you know to be true for you and for your dream to be possible. For instance, you may have a dream to go back to school, but at the time people are telling you you can’t or that you’ll never graduate. If that is something that is in your heart, do it anyway. What I have found is that people’s motives are sometimes not in the right place and their opinions are not valid. Choose to take the steps that align with your dream and what you believe is possible.

Third, even when you doubt yourself, do it anyway

If I am honest, people who are close to us can have a huge influence on our choices. Life events can cause us to stumble in our faith. These influences can impact us enough to not believe in dreams that were planted long ago. Here’s the thing – only you can choose to move forward despite your doubts. We can still move forward despite doubt because faith requires action, I believe. And when you put faith behind action, anything is possible.
