Happiness is that state of being we all want, but many times choose not to have. A road laid out before you, and yet you choose another path.
Do you ever think about how to be happy? I know I’ve wondered this in my past. When I was younger, I tried many things I thought would make me happy. None of them ever worked. I looked at other people who seemed to float through rooms on clouds and wondered how they were able to stay up there. And why I never could.
That was until later in life when I learned a valuable lesson – that happiness is a choice. There were plenty of things I was choosing that were leading me to unhappiness. These things were all external. Many of us think these external things will make us happy – be it money, friends, partners, or status. Whatever that thing may be, I can almost guarantee that that thing will let you down if that is all you are counting on to make you happy.
Fulfillment won’t come from external items or people. Sure, it might give you a sense of excitement, but, from my experience, this is short-lived. And if you are not careful, these very things and people can cause you to get addicted. Why? Because the very thing you think you need to be happy is not a lasting happiness. And before you know it, you are continuously reaching for that thing or person to stimulate you, if but for a short moment in time.
So then, what will bring you fulfillment and happiness?
When you decide to start choosing things (or people) that are right for you. Listen to your heart. It will guide you in the direction you need to go.
When you start making decisions that are right for you and that don’t harm others, you will be on your way to lasting happiness.
