In search of beauty during chaos

Even in the midst of my confusing and chaotic mind, I found an escape in the stillness.  When everyone was gone for the day, I sat on a living room sofa in silence, peering at the pale sun shedding streams of light through a window. Its rays often lit up the room, even in the midst of dreary, cold winters. And I found in this room a state of calmness and quiet. And there lay the beauty, even in a time of chaos.

At any given moment, we can turn on the news or social media and easily find some type of chaotic event happening in our world. You don’t have to imagine terrible things happening in the world because reality is showing us that they are indeed unfolding before our eyes. But could it be that even in times of chaos, we can find the beauty as well?

When I think of chaos, I immediately envision scrambling and confusion. In fact, Oxford Dictionary describes chaos as “complete disorder and confusion.”

At the beginning of an illness I underwent, my own mind often felt like this. I was in a season of complete turmoil inside, and everything was so scrambled and unclear. It was as if there was a war within me, and I often was on the losing side. I felt the drain of defeat every day and often lost hope that things would ever change.

And years later, I still go back to that place. There is beauty in chaos if you search for it. Beauty can be found in the serenity of mornings when you first wake up in a quiet room, before a hectic day begins. Or sitting in the warmth of a home while there’s a raging storm outside. Why can’t we hold onto beautiful moments like this and live life from this state of being?

Even as the chaotic stories of life continue, we can find beauty even amid them. Beauty may look different to you, but I believe you can find it too, if you search for it.
